A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck near Papua New Guinea on Saturday morning local time, according to the US Geological Survey.
This earthquake was centered on 194 km southeast of Kimbe, the capital of the new British province of West, according to the US Geological Survey.
Some aftershocks, including an earthquake measuring 5.3, were followed, according to US geological survey data.
The earthquake pushed the US tsunami warning center to issue a tsunami warning for the Pacific Islands, saying, “Dangerous tsunami waves are estimated for several beaches.”
Commemoration of the threat of the tsunami has been canceled.
