Federal immigration agents have arrested a Doctoral student of Alabama University who is an Iranian citizen, according to school and ice records.

Alireza Doroudi, a doctoral student from Iran who studied mechanical engineering, is currently detained at the detention facility, but the ES record does not include where he is detained.

The reason for the detention is not clear immediately.

“The University of Alabama Baru knows that a doctoral student has been detained outside of campus by the federal immigration authority,” the university said in a statement. “Federal Privacy Laws limit what can be shared about an individual student. International students who study at universities are members of the campus community, and student services and international scholars are available to help international students who have questions.”

“UA has and will continue to follow all immigration laws and cooperate with federal authority,” he said.

It is not clear whether he has received a legal representative.

LinkedIn Doroudi said he was “trained metallurgical engineers with more than ten years of academic experience in material science, welding, and angry.”

Earlier this month, pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was captured by ICE. Khalil has become one of the pro-Palestinian campsite leaders at Columbia University last spring.

Khalil was brought from his student apartment building in Manhattan which was lower, and then to the immigration detention facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey, before being transferred to Louisiana.

President Donald Trump claims Khalil is “Radical Foreign Pro-Hamas Students” and says this is “the first arrest of many people to come” in a post on the social platform of the truth this month.

“We will find, capture, and deport this terrorist sympathizer from our country – never come back again,” he added.

Khalil and his lawyer denied him to support Hamas or have a bond with groups.

A second student involved with protest at Columbia University was also arrested by the Department of Domestic Security this month.

Leqaa Korda was arrested by agents from the Investigation of Domestic Security for allegedly exceeding the expiry visa – which ended on January 26, 2022. The Korda was also allegedly arrested in 2024 due to its involvement in protests, according to DHS.
