The real launch of the ID, which has been postponed several times since the original deadline in 2008, has made some travelers confused about the requirements of their states and panic when they try to make an appointment at DMV that is overwhelmed.

According to Federal documentIn January 2024, only about 56% of the driver and ID licenses circulating throughout the country met the real ID.
The Department of Domestic Security estimates that only 61.2% of the license and the driver’s ID will be in accordance with the May 7 deadline. A TSA spokesman told ABC News that 81% of travelers through the TSA examination post currently have an original ID or appropriate identification.

The Motorized Vehicle Department nationally reports the old waiting time because travelers scramble to get their ID driver license, but some offer solutions for people who are looking for the last minute promise.

Diaz warned that applicants would leave their gathering promises with a copy of the paper while their ID. TSA will not accept this as valid, so they have to wait until they accept their true ID by post.

The gathering promise can also be available at the local AAA branch, according to Diaz. Not all AAA offices process real IDs, and some only offer services to members, so Diaz urges travelers to call first. Applicants may also have to pay additional fees.

If a traveler arrives at the airport without appropriate identification after May 7, TSA said they could experience delays and other difficulties at the examination post.
“Passengers who present identification issued by the country that is not in accordance with real ID and those that do not have other alternatives that can be accepted (ie, passports) can expect to face delays, additional screening and possibly not permitted to the security inspection post,” TSA said in a press release.
