Representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country had taken a “fully reasonable and legal” step to protect itself against US President Donald Trump.
“There was no winner in the tariff war and trade war,” ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing on Wednesday. “China doesn’t want to fight, but never afraid to fight.”

Lin’s response follows a question by a reporter about the latest numbers published on the White House website, which said the tariffs of Chinese goods may be up to 245%.
In a fact sheet published Tuesday, the White House says China faces such high tasks “as a result of acts of retaliation.”
“China has repeatedly clarified its strict position about the tariff problem,” Lin said on Wednesday. “This tariff war was initiated by the United States, and China has taken the handling needed to protect its legal rights and interests and international justice and justice, which is fully reasonable and legal.”
